Ormánsági Olajok – Olajütő Szövetkezet
I source beautiful local, cold-pressed plant oils from the Olajütő Szövetkezet, like grapeseed, pumpkin, sunflower, walnut and poppy seed oils. But let me start at the beginning and tell you more about the region & the Szövetkezet.
The Ormánság, where they based, is an area of small villages located in South-Baranya county, next to the River Dráva. It was a traditionally Calvinistic area with unique architecture, ornamentation and costumes. Now days, being close to the south border these rural areas are often lacking infrastructure and employment.
Still, they enjoy the highest amount of sunshine in Hungary and rich soil from the River Dráva. The Olajütő Szövetezet created something unique here in the tiny village of Kisszentmárton by founding their cooperative to create high quality cold-pressed oils as well as employment and future for the people and area. They also pay conscious attention to the environment so the side-products of the oil production are used by their partners as animal feed.
I have known about them since starting Mar Galliti and visited them briefly with an aromatherapist friend. But my real experience was when we went there for the photos you see here. Getting up early to drive down and be part of the whole process of picking the pumpkins on the field, washing and drying the seeds then pressing them into oil, was an incredible experience and I hope we can give you back some of that through these pictures.
